Our Purpose:

To help all people build life-transforming

relationships with God and each other.

GATHERING

REFLECTION

(Martin Luther King, Jr. — “I Have a Dream” speech, August 28, 1963)

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

(based on Psalm 40)

Let us wait patiently upon the Lord.

God leans in towards us and hears our prayers.

God draws us up from the pit of isolation and despair.

The Lord sets our feet securely on the right path.

God puts a new song in our hearts.

We will sing praise to the Lord our God!

Blessed are we because we put our hope and trust in God.

We gladly proclaim God's faithfulness and love!

God's great works are too numerous to count.

We lift up our voices in thanks and praise to the Lord who is our God!

OPENING PRAYER

*HYMN no. 379

“We Shall Overcome”

Lighting the candles today is Acolyte Amanda Spinweber.

CONFESSION

CORPORATE CONFESSION

God of Justice, whenever we settle for the way things are instead of the way you would have them to be, forgive us. Whenever we are paralyzed by fear or limited in vision, increase our trust in you. Whenever we offer charity, but fail to work for justice, show us the more excellent way that your love requires. Whenever we tire of the struggle and tomorrow feels overwhelming, restore our hope. Whenever we forget those who have gone before us or act is if we were the first to follow in the Way, allow us to recognize our arrogance. May the witness of saints and martyrs inspire us to an ever-deepening commitment to service in your name.

PERSONAL CONFESSION

Through the One who came as the Light to the Nations, even Jesus Christ, we pray,

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

...Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
