CALL TO WORSHIP

Alison Ribardo, Lay Reader

Let us give thanks to God for the land of our birth with all its chartered liberties. For all the wonder

of our country's story:

We give you thanks, O God.

For leaders in nation and state, and for those who in days past and in these present times have

labored for the commonwealth:

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who in all times and places have been true and brave, and in the worlds common ways have lived upright lives and ministered to their fellows:

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who served their country in its hour of need, and especially for those who gave even their lives in that service:

We give you thanks, O God.

CONFESSION

CORPORATE CONFESSION

God of every nation, as we remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, let us be stirred to action in their memory. We confess that we have not done all that is possible to promote peace and justice in our world. We have not loved our neighbors, let alone our enemies. Forgive us for failing to live up to your commandments. Empower us to work for your kingdom in this world, and welcome us by your grace into your kingdom in the next.

PERSONAL CONFESSION

In Christ’s name we pray.

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

...Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE no. 71

I will trust and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my strong-hold

   and my sure defense,

and God will be my Savior.

*LEST WE FORGET — A Litany for Memorial Day (written by Eileen Norrington)

We pray that we may learn to love one another.

God, hear our prayer.

We remember those who have loved us enough to lay down their lives for us and pray that they may rest in peace.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that you would comfort all those who mourn the loss in war of a loved one.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that we may never take the freedoms we have for granted and will share them with others.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that you will remove greed, envy, and lust for power and control from our hearts and the hearts of all people.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that you will root out racism, sexism, and violence from our lives, our communities, our nation, and our world.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that we may learn to share the world’s resources with all and not hoard them for ourselves.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray that we may learn to wage peace so that no more people will die in war.

God, hear our prayer.

We pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, trusting in the promise that whatever we ask in Christ’s name, you will give.

Amen.
