GATHERING

REFLECTION (from “Table for Five… Thousand”)

“If you hunger to be first, if you’re craving to be best,

Be as humble as a child, be a servant to the rest.”

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Ps. 78)

Leader: We asked, “Can God spread a table in the desert?”

People: When he struck the rock, water gushed out and streams flowed abundantly.

Leader: We asked, “But can God give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?”

People: God gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of heaven; he rained down manna for us to eat; he gave us the grain of heaven.

Leader: We ate the bread of angels; God sent us all the food we could eat. We ate till we had more than enough.

All: Let us worship God.

CONFESSION

CORPORATE CONFESSION

Spoken in Unison

God our strength, we confess that we are captive to the power of sin that dwells within us. We put ourselves first and others last. What we think will make us happy leaves us longing for more. Even when we want to do what is good, we find ourselves doing the opposite. Rescue us from death's grip on our lives, and raise us up day by day, that we may be alive to God in Christ Jesus. Amen.

PERSONAL CONFESSION

And let the people say,

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

...Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE no. 636

“As the Deer”

As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you.

You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship you.

You alone are my strength, my shield; to you alone may my spirit yield.

You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship you.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
