GATHERING

REFLECTION

“You’ve got to be a thermostat rather than a thermometer. A thermostat shapes the climate

of opinion; a thermometer just reflects it.”

—Cornel West

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 133)

How very good and pleasant it is when families live together in unity!

It is like precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard of Aaron.

It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion.

For there the Lord ordained the blessing upon us, life forevermore.

OPENING PRAYER

*HYMN SING

Lighting the candles today is Acolyte Daniel Barnes

CONFESSION

UNISON PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS

In every opportunity, we choose not to follow you O God. From our hearts to our mouths flow words that hurt others, come thoughts that lead us away from you. We are richly blessed, but think others should be grateful for the crumbs we offer to them. Our claims to have great faith are disputed by our inability to trust you in all things.

We come to you, Helper of the weak, for you are gracious and forgiving. You offer us the fullness of your love. You refuse to let us go. You send Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to lead us into your kingdom.

PERSONAL CONFESSION

In the name of Jesus Christ,

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

...Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE NO. 626

“As the Deer” As the Deer

As the deer pants for the water,

so my soul longs after you.

You alone are my heart’s desire,

and I long to worship you.

You alone are my strength, my shield;

to you alone may my spirit yield.

You alone are my heart’s desire,

and I long to worship you.
