Merciful God, have mercy on our souls, according to your unwavering love; according to your abundant mercy wipe away our sins and the guilt we have carried

for so long.

Instead write on our hearts your love; your boundaries for our lives; your salvation that sets us free; to live the abundant life you have for each of us.

ALL:  Lord, create in us clean hearts, renew your spirit within us. Do not turn us away from your presence, do not take your holy spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and sustain in us a willing spirit. Write your love on our hearts, O God.

SCRIPTURE

2 Samuel 11:1-21

pg. 271-272, OT

King David arises from his afternoon nap and lays his eyes upon a beautiful woman, Bathsheba, bathing in her home. Overcome, he sends his couriers to fetch her. He has relations with her, resulting in her pregnancy. David recalls her husband, Uriah, from the battlefield for a brief furlough at home with his wife, but dutiful Uriah keeps watch all night outside the palace. David then plies Uriah with alcohol, but he sleeps in the palace compound. So David plots to send Uriah back to the war, to be killed in a retreat ordered by David via Joab.
