Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

REFLECTION

None of the players in this story come off well. None appeared to offer better mettle for the history of salvation. Far from it, and therein we can take encouragement, for these people and their families look, feel, sound and act like us. In God’s hands the incidental, the accidental and the ordinary became the material of redemptive history. Likewise, we today find our own place and role in Yahweh's story of salvation.   - Dr. Daniel Clendenin

WORDS OF WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP & OPENING PRAYER

As we wait upon the Lord, let us open our eyes,

That we might both see and perceive the will of the Lord.

As we wait upon the Lord, let us open our ears,

That we might both hear and heed the word of the Lord.

As we wait upon the Lord, let us open our hearts.

That we might understand with our hearts and turn to the Lord for healing.

God of old stories and new beginnings, open our lives today to the new that you long to accomplish in our lives. Speak our names today, call us to higher purposes, fill us with your Spirit that we may worthily praise you and magnify your Holy name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.

SUMMER HYMN SING

  “God of Grace and God of Glory” (Hymn No. 307, St. 1 & 4)

God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power;

Crown thine ancient church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,

For the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour.

Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore.

Let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,

Serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore.

  “Be Thou My Vision” (Hymn No. 450, St. 1 & 4)

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Walking of sleeping, thy presence my light.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun.

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (In Unison)

God of life, Lord of mercy, we confess that, like Esau and Jacob, we selfishly make decisions that do not honor you or others. Believing ourselves wise, we foolishly follow our own way, falling short of your glory. Our pride keeps us from being honest about ourselves, our sin, and our needs. Forgive us, we pray, and grant us the gift of your healing grace. Restore again both the joy of knowing you and the freedom of being known by you. Make us new and lead us in the way of life everlasting. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Friends, hear the Good News! All who are moved by the Spirit of God are children

of God.

We are heirs of God's splendor with Jesus Christ.

Friends, believe the Good News!

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen.
