“A Summer of Spirituals”
This summer, we are diving into the world of spirituals—one of the most profound bodies of sacred music born from human suffering. Our sermon series “A Summer of Spirituals” will let these songs lead us into a world of scripture, where we find the true depths of our Christian life. The spirituals were not anthems of resignation, but theologies forged in the ruins of unimaginable pain—songs that looked death in the face, sat with suffering and injustice, and yet still dared to hope! The saints of our past who have held these songs in their hearts new something about faith that comfort can rarely, if ever, teach: That God is found not only on the mountaintop, but in the valley, in the wilderness, in the waiting. Each week, we will surround a spiritual with scripture to feel the Spirit’s presence in our suffering and the peace that defies circumstance. So, come ready to sing, to lament, to hope, and to be surprised by how much we can still learn from the saints of our lives.
